What is Dental Sedation?

We use dental sedation to help patients feel more comfortable during dental procedures. If you feel significantly nervous about treatment, have a strong gag reflex or very sensitive teeth, your endodontist can help you determine if a dental sedation option is right for you.
At Endodontic Specialists, we do everything we can to help patients with high anxiety about dental treatments feel comfortable and relaxed during their endodontic appointments.
Along with offering dental sedation options, we will work at your pace, take breaks as you need them, and provide calm reassurance as required.
Our options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, general anesthesia and IV sedation.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Patients inhale nitrous oxide through the nose and mouth. The medication calms patients while they remain awake and able to communicate. It also tends to increase pain threshold, lessen anxiety, make time pass more quickly and reduce gag reflex.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives come in liquid or pill form and can be prescribed by your endodontist. This medication would be taken orally before an endodontic appointment. While it leaves you awake for the procedure, it produces a calming effect to leave you feeling significantly relaxed.
General Anesthesia & IV Sedation
With general anesthesia, you will be in a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates, movement discomfort and awareness during endodontic treatment. Complex treatments can be completed while you are asleep.
IV sedatives are administered directly into the blood stream through the vein by a certified anesthesiologist. You will be in a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates, movement discomfort and awareness during endodontic treatment.
Complex treatments can be completed while you are sedated. The anesthesiologist will administer and monitor the sedation.
